GT Style Headlights

This guide is a GT style conversion for 1st Gen 3000GTs and Stealths with pop-up style headlights.

1.Remove headlight cover and lower "snake eye" from car and headlight assembly. Tape the headlight to the snake eye in a flush manner. This will be the templete for the lens. Compare back to car for accurate template.

2.Cover up with aluminum foil for less heat transfer.

3.Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Place headlight cover and a pice of acrylic on top of it. Let it bake for 3-4 min.

4.Acrylic should form to the template you made. Allow time for the acrylic to cool.

5.Trim down the lens to the desired shape for your headlight. Smooth the edges.

6.Take some vacuum line and slice it down the middle. This will be used for the outer edge of the lens.

7.Paint an eyebrow if you like. The lens is done.

8.Remove these parts from the headlight assembly.

9.Make a scratch version with cardboard of your headlight assembly.

10.Cut an aluminum sheet to fit the template. Make sure to get aluminum because it does not rust.

11.Fold and paint the bracket according to the template. Drill holes according to the headlight bracket and to hold the whole assembly into place.

12.Test fitment.

Repeat for other side.

With the lights on.

Euro Spec 3000GT

MK1 European 3000GT

The European UK Domestic Market or UKDM 3000GT was put on sale in the UK in early ‘93 and was very limited options wise. There was only the one model. Externally the body differed from the GTO by having headlamp washers where the snake-eyes on the GTO were placed, necessitating a different nosecone/front indicator/sidelight assembly. The rear bumper number plate cutout was also different to suit the standard size UK number plate.

All cars are 2972cc twin turbo 5-sp manual 4WD/4WS, with the majority of cars having moon roof/etc fitted. All UK cars had the later revised engine, larger alloy wheels and brake upgrade, as well as being equipped with larger MHI TD04-13G turbos.

The front lower lights in the bumper are driving lights rather than the GTO’s pair of front fog lights. While they look externally identical, they have a different reflector pattern and automatically come on when main beam on the headlights is switched on. The 3000GT also has an oil level warning light on the dashboard as opposed to the oil pressure light on the GTO.

Main Differences Cosmetically Between MK European and US 3000GT

Clear Sidemarkers

Front Position Turn Signals (One unit with Amber Bulbs)
No Foglights (but High Beams)
No "Black Line" across front bumper
Headlight washers instead of position lights
Wider rear bumper number plate (to fit UK number plate)

All GTO/3000GT motors within the U.K. are V6 3.0 litre constant mesh 4 wheel drive, the variations offered from this are briefly outlined below. All Mk 1 versions were fitted with the earlier pop-up headlights as standard. The Mk11s’ had a facelift with faired in twin headlights and other minor cosmetic changes. Not all versions were fitted with 4 wheel steering, this is not present on some MRs or some of the non turbos’. [note; in the case of imports from the U.S.A. the engine size/spec may differ]

3000GT; This is the U.K. version. It only comes as a Twin Turbo model, has full leather upholstery, 13g turbos’, larger brake discs, different nose cone for the Mk1 version [pop-up headlight variety], 5 or 6 speed manual transmission, the Mk 1s had five speed boxes as did some early Mk11s, later models were fitted with the six speed gearbox. U.K. supplied motors will have more chance of a decent or full service history and should be slightly cheaper to insure, this of course all reflects within the asking price.

Blast From The Past

Stealth Appears on Speed Channels “Passtime”

Looks like the 3S community just got another 15 minutes of fame. Speed Channel’s “Passtime” gives contestants the opportunity to ask a few questions and then guess a quarter-mile time for the given car. Thats right, running 31 pounds of boost, Matt from Dynamic.
